“Grey’s Anatomy” will be one resident short when it returns for season 14. Jerrika Hinton is leaving the show, which means fans will say goodbye to Dr. Stephanie Edwards very soon. The question is how the doctor will leave. The current storyline for her character indicates a potential way. Is it possible that she will give up after repeat failures?
The loss of a child and assuming nothing
From her very first day at “Grey’s Anatomy,” Edwards has been the smart, driven, and capable surgeon. She is eager to learn and knows everything in medical textbooks.
It was later revealed that her character had suffered from sickle cell as a child and had plenty of time to read books. While this helped her with medical knowledge, it didn’t prepare her for the loss of a patient.
The hardest loss of all was a child. It was her first surgery from start to finish, despite Arizona arguing against it. Maybe the loss would have been easier had her teacher Eliza Minnick helped her understand it afterwards. Instead, Edwards was forced to turn to Richard Webber, who was able to help her through the loss.
She hasn’t quite ever moved on. Now she second guesses herself and this week brushed off a patient, believing him to have “internitus.” However, the hypochondria turned out to be a very real and very contagious disease.
Will Edwards quit in ‘Grey’s Anatomy'?
There are usually three ways that doctors leave the show. The first is that they’re killed off. The first time this happened was in season 5, with George O’Malley and since then fans have lost Lexie Grey, Mark Sloan, and Derek Shepherd. The second way is by the doctors choosing to move on, like Cristina Yang and Callie Torres.
The third is by quitting or being kicked out of the program, like Izzie Stevens and Leah Murphy (who is back but hasn’t been seen in a while).
With the current storyline, it is likely that Edwards will decide to quit. She will start to doubt herself and leave the hospital of “Grey’s Anatomy” behind. However, Shonda Rhimes has hinted that there will be a major catastrophe in the “Grey’s Anatomy” season 13 finale, which could mean that she is killed off just as she finds her feet again.
This wouldn't be the first time that something like this has happened.
How do you think Edwards will leave the show? Will “Grey’s Anatomy” lose another doctor to the Grim Reaper or will she walk free from Grey Sloan Memorial? Feel free to share in the comments below.
