The 2017 Earth Day celebration is getting even more press than usual due to the fact that Donald Trump and the Republicans have control over the White House and Congress. While Trump attempted to put a positive spin on his proposals that impact the environment, one high-profiled critic of the president decided to voice his thoughts on the issue at hand.
Takei on Trump
When Donald Trump made it official that he was going to run for president nearly two years ago, he did on a platform that was different than anyone else in the race.
Taking elements of the Republican Party and mixing them with a message that resonated with those who were tired of "politics as usual," the former host of "The Apprentice" was able to win over enough of the American people to pull off the monumental upset over former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton last November. However, since his election, Trump has gone hard-right when it comes to many of his policies and executives orders, including the nomination of Scott Pruitt to run the EPA, as well as his other orders that are expected to have a negative impact on the environment. As millions across the country raise awareness of these issues on Earth Day, Trump took to Twitter to acknowledge the event, but was quickly mocked in the process.
For actor George Takei, who has been vocal in his opposition of Trump, the former "Star Trek" star sent out several tweets to voice his frustration with the commander in chief.
Using his Twitter account to reach 2.29 million followers, George Takei went off on Donald Trump. "It's telling that Donald's only policy accomplishments are executive orders," Takei tweeted, before adding, "Easy to make deals if you're only making them with yourself."
"Every day, Donald turns the clock back on environmental progress. It's more important than ever to act to protect our planet," George Takei wrote on Twitter, while using the hashtag "#EarthDay." In a follow-up tweet, Takei continued to dig into the billionare real estate mogul.
"Donald is such a uniter," Takei wrote with sarcasm, while noting, "Every single member of Congress representing a southwest border district opposes his border wall funding request."
Trump trouble
Like George Takei, many Americans are frustrated and angry with how Donald Trump has run the White House in his first 100 days in office. Despite the backlash and his poll numbers dropping to historic lows, it doesn't look as if Trump will be changing his ways anytime soon.
