While the political headlines are often dominated by news about Donald Trump, other stories often fly under the radar. Despite this, comedian Bill Maher was quick to put focus on a Republican state senator who was caught allegedly having sex with an underage boy.

It's no secret that the Republican Party is against same-sex marriage, with many of their views targeting the LGBT community in a negative way. Many Republicans are considered devout Christians, and use their religious views to help guide where they stand on a variety of political topics.

While this may be the case, there have been examples of conservative Republicans getting caught in direct contrast of their political rhetoric, with many male members of the religious right being found engaging in homosexual acts. One of the most recent examples is Ralph Shortey, a former Oklahoma State senator and county coordinator for the Donald Trump campaign. Last month, Shortey was forced to turn himself into authorities after being caught with a 17-year-old boy in a motel room with an "open box of condoms" nearby, while promoting child prostitution. The story has recently gained national exposure, and was the topic of a series of April 3 tweets from Bill Maher.

Taking to his Twitter account on Monday night, Bill Maher highlighted Bill Shortey's recent issues.

"How bout some NON Trump news? Oklahoma state senator Ralph Shortey, married Republican w/ kids, was caught in a hotel with a teenage boy!" Maher enthusiastically tweeted out. Moments later, Maher corrected himself by finding the link between Shortey and Donald Trump. "I lied, he was the state chair of Trump's Oklahoma primary campaign," he wrote.

In his third and final tweet on the matter as of press time, Bill Maher mocked and trolled the state senator.

"Man, leave it to a Republican to take something nice like adulterous sex with a teenage hustler and make it gross," he tweeted out. The local district attorney filed three felony charges against Shortey, which include, but are not limited to, child prostitution.

Moving forward

While the issue involving Ralph Shortey appears to be isolated to just one individual, it does represent a larger problem that is often pointed out by people like Bill Maher. Republicans might speak out against issues dealing with morality, but they often find themselves in the hypocritical position of defending one of their own who has abandoned those principals.
