Caution: there are spoilers in this post about "The Vampire Diaries" series finale. If you haven't watched it yet, please go do so unless you want to know who the main character that died was and what happened in the final moments.
"The Vampire Diaries" was always about Stefan Salvatore. It should have been obvious to many fans that he would be the one to die in the end. There was no way that he could have survived, especially considering the episodes leading up to the series finale. Stefan was human, and humans have a limited lifespan.
Stefan made it clear that 'The Vampire Diaries' was about him
Many fans have debated over the weekend about the “TVD” series finale. One of those debates was about whose story it was. It was a common misconception that the story was all about Elena Gilbert. She was the one to write the initial diary and it was about her love story between the two Salvatore brothers in the beginning.
However, Stefan makes it very clear in the pilot episode that it is all about him. He makes it very clear by saying “this is my story.” There is no doubt about it and it means that he just had to die at the very end, sharing about his life story throughout.
Anybody could have died in ‘TVD’ series finale
There are many fans who believe that anybody could have died in the end.
Sure enough, executive producers Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson have shared that there was the plan to kill everyone except Bonnie at some point. Technically, every character except Caroline died in the show – they were human, so would have died eventually. Fans just got to see Elena and Damon get their happy ever afters in the end.
However, there was always the plan to kill Stefan. That was going to happen without question. Originally, Plec was going to find a way to bring the love triangle back, but that couldn’t happen when Nina Dobrev decided to leave the show. Steroline was able to happen and Stefan’s story with his brother was able to take up the final two seasons. There is still no doubt that “The Vampire Diaries” was always Stefan’s story.
