The Oscars are almost here! And if you did not get the chance to watch each movie nominated for the Best Picture Award, here are a few facts about each nominee to help you pick your favorite without any spoilers.
'La La Land'
A huge success for the industry, "La La Land" is a movie by Fred Berger, Jordan Horowitz and Marc Platt. Starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, who are also nominees for the Best Actor/Actress in a Leading Role award because of their roles in this picture, "La La Land" tells the tale of a young couple striving to find success in show business and keep their relationship alive.
Amassing 14 nominations, "La La Land" will be a big hit in the Oscars 2017 ceremony.
'Arrival'
By Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, Aaron Ryder and David Linde, "Arrival" shows the US military seeking help to understand the purpose of an alien’s visit to Earth, while also debating what to do about it. Director Denis Villeneuve is also a nominee for the Best Director award, and the movie stars Amy Adams, Forest Whitaker and Jeremy Renner. The movie is also nominated for another seven Oscar statuettes.
'Fences'
Troy Maxson (Denzel Washington) is a hardworking man in the 1950’s, long nurturing his anger over the fact that he never joined the professional baseball league because of his race.
Now, as his younger son Cory (Jovan Adepo) has a shot with a professional football player career, the old wounds are bound to create a lot of tension between them. The movie also stars Viola Davis, nominated for the Actress in a Supporting Role award.
'Hacksaw Ridge'
Directed by Mel Gibson, this movie by Bill Mechanic and David Permut tells the tale of Desmond T. Doss (Abdrew Garfield), one of America’s greatest pacifists of all time, and his trials during World War II. The movie also stars Teresa Palmer and Vince Vaughn, and is on the run for other five Oscars awards, including Directing and Actor in a Leading Role.
'Hell or High Water'
Bearing four nominations in the 2017 Oscars, "Hell or High Water" is Carla Hacken and Julie Yor’s first nomination.
Starring Jeff Bridges, Ben Foster and Chris Pine, this movie shows the last mission of a Texas Ranger before his retirement: catch two brothers robbing branches of a big bank.
'Hidden Figures'
Starring Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monáe, this movie takes place in 1961, when a trio of inspired black women work their way up in NASA, facing racism and sexism at every turn. This picture is also in the run for the Writing (Adapted Screenplay) and Actress in a Supporting Role (Octavia Spencer) Oscars statuettes.
'Lion'
Based on a real story, this overtly melodramatic movie shows Saroo’s (Dev Patel) journey to find his biological family. The picture was also nominated in other five Oscars categories.
'Manchester by the Sea'
This heavy drama portrays Lee Chandler’s (Casey Affleck) return to his hometown after his brother dies and leaves his nephew under his care. A very well written piece, this movie was also nominated for other five Academy Awards, including Directing and Writing (Original Screenplay).
'Moonlight'
By Adele Romanski, Jeremy Kleiner and Dede Gardner, this picture shows the main character, Chiron, in three moments of his challenging life in Miami. Also nominated for another seven statuettes, "Moonlight" stars Alex R. Hibbert, Ashton Sanders, Trevante Rhodes, Mahershala Ali and Janelle Monáe.
Final Words on the 2017 Oscars Best Picture nominees
"La La Land" will most likely win the night, but many of its contestants are truly great pictures and should be checked out.
