When "X-Men: Apocalypse" ended, FOX added a nice post-credit scene that almost everyone mistakenly guessed the meaning of. In that scene, a man walked into the room that Wolverine was held captive in and went to a cabinet. The man then took out a vile of Wolverine's blood and put it in an ESSEX CORP. briefcase. It turns out that in some interesting "Logan" spoilers, that the "X-Men: Apocalypse" post-credit scene actually ties in with the main storyline from "Logan." Spoilers follow in this article.
The 'X-Men' scene had nothing to do with Mr. Sinister -- yet
One of the X-Men's most iconic bad guys from their long history was a villain named Mr. Sinister. The reason for the confusion is simple. Mr. Sinister is Nathaniel Essex, first appeared in the X-Men comics in 1987, and became one of their most dangerous villains. However, this scene did not introduce Mr. Sinister to the movie world yet. Bryan Singer said that Mr. Sinister will appear in future X-Men movies, such as possibly Gambit or one of the next X-Men films, but he never appeared in "Logan."
'Logan' introduces X-23
While there were thoughts of introducing Mr.
Sinister in "Logan," director James Mangold wanted to ground the film and chose not to add a flashy mutant to the action. Instead, the "Apocalypse" post-credit scene was the way that they connected X-Men to "Logan." The stolen blood was simply to help create X-23. Logan's blood was instrumental in developing the new mutant character that Wolverine is tasked with protecting in his new movie. The fact that it is his own blood that helped bring her to life made it an even more personal story. Without spoiling what happens in the movie, the comic books introduced X-23 as the clone-daughter of Wolverine. The popular mutant died in the comic books and X-23 is the new Wolverine in the comics.
The future of Wolverine
While "Logan" was called the final appearance of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, director James Mangold has said that no one should replace him. Eliminating the most popular character from the series completely is dangerous for commercial purposes. However, if X-23 proves popular, the future movies could have her take over as she does in the comics. If that is the case, that final "X-Men: Apocalypse" scene should play strongly into the future of the franchise.
