Oscar nominations were announced on Tuesday, January 24, 2017 that include some interesting and record-breaking things. For instance, “La La Land” received 14 nominations. That number is a tie with “Titanic” and “All About Eve” for the most nominations in Academy Award history. "La La Land" stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone for Best Lead Actor and Best Lead Actress. The film was nominated for Best Picture and Best Director.
It was earlier this month on January 8 when "La La Land" won in every category it was nominated for at the 74th Golden Globe Awards -- resulting in a record-breaking seven wins. Is it possible for "La La Land" to win big at the Oscars?
"Moonlight" received eight nominations. Mel Gibson was nominated for something after 10 years. He was nominated for Best Director for "Hacksaw Ridge." Meryl Streep received her 20th nomination. "Arrival" was nominated in eight categories. For the first time, a streaming service received a Best Picture nomination. It was Amazon's "Manchester by the Sea."
Black performers
Last year, no black actors were nominated.
This year, six black actors are nominated. This is the record for the largest number of black nominations for the Oscars. Denzel Washington is nominated for Best Actor for his role in "Fences." Viola Davis is nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category for her role in "Fences" as well. She is competing along with Octavia Spencer for Best Supporting Actress in "Hidden Figures."
Three other blacks are also nominated. Mahershala Ali and Naomie Harris each received a nomination for their supporting work in “Moonlight." Ruth Negga is nominated for Best Actress for her role in "Loving."
