It's official! Nina Dobrev is returning to "The Vampire Diaries" for the show's finale, scheduled to air in mid-March. The actress confirmed the exciting news on her Instagram account on Thursday, posting a picture of a script from the show. Although Nina left "TVD" after Season 6 aired back in 2015, fans hoped that she would come back at some point to reprise the role of Elena Gilbert.

She Was Loved And Missed

After leaving the show, Nina's absence was felt by the fans and by the rest of the cast and crew. According to Us Weekly, Dobrev's name came up quite a bit since she left the show and it sounds like the fans weren't the only ones that wanted Elena back!

"We'd love to have Nina back. She was great for the CW — she was integral to 'The Vampire Diaries,'" said CW president Mark Pedowitz back in August.

"I miss her deeply and would take her back in an instant if she called and said, 'Hey, can I come back and play?'" Julie Plec, executive producer, said in January 2016.

What Will Happen With The Plot?

This is the golden question at the moment, isn't it? Fans are very curious about what will happen to Elena and how the series will end. It seems obvious that she will wake up from the "decades-long sleep" that she fell into before her character was written off the show.

So, what's in store for the finale? Many fans have been theorizing that there will be a sort of "flash-forward" into the future and that Bonnie will die in order for Elena to wake up.

Naturally, there are a lot of fans that are hoping to see Elena and Damon reconnect -- even if it is only for a short time (and only on television!).

Will Bonnie become a vampire after all? Or, maybe, Enzo will become human! There are so many things that could happen on the show's finale but, so far, nothing major has leaked in the way of spoilers.

The only thing we know for sure is that the end of "TVD" has to be epic.

The series finale of "The Vampire Diaries" airs on the Friday, March 10, at 8 p.m. ET. Will you be tuning in? Are you excited for Elena's return? Let us know in the comments section below!
