The 74th annual Golden Globes will likely be remembered as the night award-winning actress Meryl Streep made the Hollywood case against Donald Trump. After Trump responded in typical fashion to Streep, other celebrities came to her defense.
Trump faces backlash
Meryl Streep came on stage at the 2017 Golden Globes to accept the prestigious Cecil B. Demille Award, but instead of speaking about her career, she took aim at Donald Trump.
Without even mentioning his name, Streep gave a speech that lasted nearly six minutes in length, making sure to give a passionate take on why the billionaire real estate mogul should not have won the election. Trump's first response came during an early morning interview with The New York Times where he dismissed Streep's remarks, referring to her as a "Hillary lover." The next morning, Trump bashed the actress in a series of tweets, but received backlash from several celebrities, as seen on Twitter on January 9.
"Trump's response to Meryl Streep--childish, churlish, petulant--is exactly why most Americans fear his presidency," author Stephen King wrote on Twitter, before adding, "Emotionally unqualified." "Meryl Streep was eloquent tonight.
We must never stop saying what needs to said," actor and director Rob Reiner added on his Twitter page, also noting, "We must never normalize an unstable lying infantile POTUS."
"A bigger man would own his mistake and apologize for mocking him. A better president would take criticism without name calling on Twitter," actor George Takei wrote. In a follow-up tweet, Takei continued to point out how Donald Trump mocked a disabled reporter, something Meryl Streep noted in her Golden Globes speech. "Donald, we all saw you mock that disabled reporter. You also mocked Marlee Matlin as 'retarded,' Takei noted, while also stating, "Just admit you're a bully--and a liar."
Rosie responds
As part of her routine shots at the former host of "The Apprentice," actress and former talk show host, Rosie O'Donnell, was not shy about giving her thoughts on Trump's reaction to the Meryl Streep speech.
"The worlds best actress spoke the truth about you - the world worst human and biggest liar," O'Donnell wrote, while adding the hashtags "#TheResistance" and "#uSUCK."
Trump's defense
Donald Trump referred to Meryl Streep as "one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood," and a "Hillary flunky." Streep, who has been nominated for over 400 awards over her illustrious career, appeared to hit a nerve with Trump. With just over a week until he is sworn into office, the battle between Trump and Hollywood doesn't seem to be ending anytime soon.
