In an article for The Christian Post, Darrell Harrison asks, "What's wrong with being a white evangelical?" He asserts that support for Donald Trump is the reason that white male Christians seem to be lumped together and discredited. The issue is not so much that this segment of Christianity voted for number 45 as it is the fact that so many seem to agree with the racist, sexist, and anti-Semitic views that the Donald holds.
Ever since the neo-Nazi rally in Charlottesville Va., many Americans believe that Evangelical Christians have ignored the many bad decisions this president has made simply because he is against abortion and same-sex marriage.
The root of growing criticism against evangelicals
During his 2016 presidential campaign, Donald Trump emphasized that he was against abortion and believed marriage should only be between a man and a woman. For this reason, a number of individuals identifying as evangelicals voted for him. Prominent ministers such as Franklin Graham, Paula White, and Liberty University Chancellor Jerry Falwell all gave number 45 their support.
Many Americans considered the viewpoint of these Christians as narrow-minded and bigoted. Some pointed out that Jesus preached love and tolerance. Donald Trump's desire to build a border wall and referring to immigrants as rapists and murderers fueled like-minded people such as Judge Roy Moore who ran for Congress, espousing the same supposedly Christian views as the president.
The tide is turning against white evangelicals
The sexual assault allegations against Roy Moore caused people to reiterate the women who said the same about Donald Trump. By the time of the election, people were fed up with the attitudes of white evangelicals. The judge lost to Doug Jones, who prosecuted the men who bombed the Birmingham church in the 1960's and killed four little girls.
It's not that anything is wrong with being a white evangelical, but the issue is what they seem to stand for. It is as though they are looking at the nation the way it was 50 years ago and this is why the tide is turning against their bigoted attitudes. America is already diverse in many ways and it is not going to change. There is also the fact that Donald Trump was voted into office despite the "Access Hollywood" tape where he admitted to groping women. A growing number of U.S. citizens are troubled that Christians continue to support number 45 who ignores the majority in this nation to play to his base.
