We see all these home improvement shows and the hosts always display such beautify indoor Plants or include some greenery into their designs. But is it simply to enhance the home or are there other benefits to having plants in the home? Research has shown that plants do have many beneficial elements when added to our physical Environment at a biological level as well as at a psychological level.

Seven ways that we can use plants to improve our environment:

One of the main benefits of having plants in the home is the production of oxygen. Plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen.

They absorb all the bad air and release good air. This makes breathing easier because there is an increase in oxygen in the home. They remove some of the toxins that are found in the air. It can decrease the amount of dust in the air.

Because of the increase in oxygen, the body absorbs more refreshed air. It is recommended that plants be placed in the bedroom for a more restful sleep.

It can give a sense of relaxation

The smell of some the plants e.g. chamomile or lavender also promotes relaxation. Placing these plants in the bedroom can also assist in a more restful sleep. The greenery also creates a relaxing atmosphere because it seems quieter. It also gives positive visual focus because they are interesting and stimulating in a good way.

Produces moisture in the air

Plants release water vapor or moisture which increases humidity in the air. This assists with respiratory problems and issues such as colds, sore throats, etc. This can help to keep the environment fresh.

Can improve attention

Research has found that plants can increase the attention of persons when they are placed in a room.

Decrease background noise

Plants can help to lower the background noise of e.g. a busy street or even noise inside your building.

Well, all these are great, so should I turn my home into a greenhouse? The amounts of plants you have in your home will be influenced by your needs. For example, if you wish to reduce stress, place a large plant where it is easily seen by everyone in the room.
