Robert Mueller worked for 12 years in the U.S. Attorney's office, served as the chief of the criminal division in the Northern District of California in San Francisco, and he also worked as an assistant U.S. attorney in Boston.

Robert Mueller also worked in the private sector, before working as an assistant to the attorney general in 1989. Director of FBI from 2001 to 2013, he retired from the Bureau and joined the private law firm Wilmer Hale, from which he has resigned to take the role of special counsel.
