Every year the world takes time to honor those who suffered during the Holocaust, and this year is no exception. For Donald Trump, his tweet acknowledging those who died during the Holocaust didn't go over well with critics.
Trump on Holocaust
Since the early days of his campaign for president, Donald Trump has been accused of various forms of bigotry and prejudice. Whether it's racism, sexism, Islamaphobia, or antisemitism, the former host of "The Apprentice" has had a constant battle to defend himself from these allegations.
In regards to antisemitism, Trump caused headlines last year following the riots in Charlottesville, Virginia between neo-Nazi groups and rival protesters. Trump spoke out against "bigotry on all sides," which resulted in the president being accused of sympathizing with white nationalists.
Fast forward to present day and the world is recognizing holocaust remembrance day, which Donald Trump decided to comment on during an April 12 post on Twitter. "On Yom HaShoah we remember the six million Jews slaughtered in the Holocaust," Trump tweeted. "With each passing year, our duty to remember this atrocity increases as we pledge #NeverAgain," he noted, while adding an attaching where Trump declared the week of April 12 through April 19 as the Days of Remembrance of Victims of the Holocaust.
Twitter revolts
Following his words about Holocaust Remembrance Day, Donald Trump received massive push back from critics who were not impressed. "There is no way you wrote this one," one tweet read.
"Zero percent chance he wrote this tweet," a Twitter user wrote. "How dare you? Remember Charlottesville? 'Jews will not replace us' and you, 'good people on both sides'! Your a fowl pri*k!" a tweet pointed out. "Please go directly to jail," yet another tweet added.
"You seem to issue an awful lot of proclamations...and other than that and morally bankrupting our nation...what else exactly do you do with your days?" a social media user asked. "Have you gotten into a fight with the Anne Frank Center yet this year?" a tweet sarcastically wondered.
On Wednesday night, First Daughter Ivanka Trump sent out a similar tweet for Holocaust Remembrance Day and also came under fire despite the tweet appearing to be good-natured. With an approval rating of just 40 percent and showing no signs of improving, the rift between Trump and the majority of the American people moves forward.
