Earlier this week, Donald Trump welcomed the NCAA National Football champion Alabama Crimson Tide to the White House. In response, Sarah Huckabee Sanders decided to send out a tweet, but it didn't go over well with critics.

Sanders on Alabama football

It was last fall when Donald Trump was campaigning in the Alabama special election in support of Republican primary candidate Luther Strange.

During his speech, Trump went off script to rip NFL players who decided to protest during the playing of the national anthem, going as far as referring to them as a "son of a b*tch" who deserved to be fired. In the weeks that followed, Trump and his feud with the NFL only increased, reaching a fever pitch when athletes from the NBA, like LeBron James, called the president out, while the NBA champion Golden State Warriors refused an invitation to appear at the White House. However, Trump's view on college football is different, as he appeared during the playing of the national anthem during the national title game last January.

On Wednesday, the Alabama Crimson Tide football team joined Donald Trump at the White House during a traditional ceremony following their championship win.

As the president and team prayed, led by Alabama punter JK Scott, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders tweeted a photo and praised Trump and the team. "As a proud Arkansan, I’m not an Alabama Football fan, but I was a big fan of this prayer for POTUS," Sanders tweeted out. As expected, those who oppose the administration wasted no time hitting back.

Twitter backlash

After Sarah Huckabee Sanders tweeted out about Donald Trump praying with the Alabama football team, critics decided to quickly chime in. "Sure you were...prayers needed to save your soul," one tweet read.

"No prayers for this Traitor- who is NO POTUS," one Twitter user wrote.

"Sarah stop lying for Trump it fu*ks up your moral standards, you shall fall with him, and forever be disrespected, dumba**," a tweet stated. "Yes she inspires like Christ himself did. Able to turn one man's actions into a heroic fairy tale. One day the Bible will be replaced by the word of Trump. Written by Sarah, Kelly Ann, Mike and Jarrod. Amen praise Trump!" one sarcastic tweet noted.

"Psuedo Christians with no sense of ethics or integrity because there is no moral compass," a social media user wrote.

"Another clear example of how insidious, ill-equipped, unqualified, unprofessional, incompetent YOU and TRUMP are - Frankly, the words for you would be: SIMPLE HICK- GET THEM OUT-IMPEACHMENT NOW FOR THE 45TH!!!" a follow-up tweet read.
