On Thursday, two Florida deputies were killed after being ambushed inside a restaurant in Trenton. In response, Donald Trump was quick to offer his thoughts on Twitter.
Trump on Florida shooting
In yet another tragedy, two deputies were kill inside Ace China restaurant around 3 p.m. local time in Gilchrist County, Florida. Just moments after the officers were shot and killed, the gunman reportedly walked back to his car and took his own life.
In a statement released by the Golchrist Country Police Department, the incident "remains an active criminal investigation with no apparent motive or indications as to why this tragedy occurred." As of press time, neither the deputies nor the gunman's identification have not been released to the public.
Responding to the news was Donald Trump who sent out a tweet on April 20. "My thoughts, prayers and condolences are with the families, friends and colleagues of the two @GCSOFlorida deputies (HEROES) who lost their lives in the line of duty today," Trump tweeted out. Trump's response is similar to what he usually posts following a tragedy involving the use of a gun.
The president's reaction almost always sparks another debate about gun control in the United States, with the recent mass shooting in Parkland, Florida leading to a massive rally last month in Washington and around the world, much to the chagrin of conservatives. As expected, those who oppose the commander in chief and his administration quickly responded back, making sure to focus on the president's lack of progress on gun control.
Twitter revolts
Following Donald Trump's tweet about the fatal Police shooting in Florida, critics lashed out. "Thoughts and prayers are never enough," one tweet read.
"Just shut up. Donate ur brain to science.. Barely used," a Twitter user wrote. "You pretend to love law enforcement but disparage the FBI.
You’re a fraud," yet another tweet added. "If the bad guy didn’t have a gun this would not have happened. Agree?" an additional tweet wondered.
"Why didn't you send your Condolences and Prayers to the man who lost his life in Trump Tower's fire?" a social media user wondered. "You neither think nor pray, so you're doing nothing? Par for the course," a follow-up tweet read. As the negative reaction and backlash continued to pour in, it became clear that the rift between those who support Donald Trump and those who oppose him will not be getting better at any point in the near future.
