After weeks of anticipation, Donald Trump's trolling of the mainstream media came to a head as he revealed the winners of his first annual "Fake News Awards." Once the results were announced, critics of the president decided to chime in.

Trump and "fake news"

The use of the term "fake news" kicked into high gear following Donald Trump's upset win over Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

After it was revealed that Russia hacked into the election and infiltrated to several social media outlet, those who oppose Trump blamed "fake news" for Clinton's defeat. However, Trump was quick to take control of the term and has since used it to describe any news outlet, story, or report that he doesn't agree with. Whether it's CNN or NBC, to the Washington Post and New York Times, the former host of "The Apprentice" has ripped into the mainstream media whenever he feels that he is not getting treated fairly, doing so on an almost daily basis by calling out the press during his rants on Twitter.

As 2017 came to a close, Trump announced that he would be creating the "Fake News Awards," otherwise known as the "Most Dishonest & Corrupt Media Awards of the Year," in an attempt to shame those who he feels are most guilty. As seen during a series of tweets on January 17, the winners were announced.

Taking to Twitter on Wednesday night, Donald Trump announced the winners of the "Fake News Awards." "And the FAKE NEWS winners are..." the president wrote while linking back to the offical Republican Party website. While the site crashed within seconds, Fox News reports that the winner is New York Times Paul Krugman for predicting that the stock markets would "never recover" after a Trump election.

In second place was Brian Ross of ABC News for incorrectly reporting Trump's link to Russia. CNN took home third place for reporting that the president and his son, Donald Trump Jr. had access to Wikileaks documents before they were made public. TIME Magazine came in forth for their report that Trump removed a bust of Martin Luther King Jr. in the Oval Office. Rounding out the top five was the Washington Post for their report that a Trump rally in Florida was nearly empty. CNN and the New York Times were also ranked twice on the list, with "Russia Collusion" by itself being the last.

As Donald Trump continues to be at odds with the mainstream media, reporters and journalists don't seem willing to take their foot of the gas of accountability anytime soon.

With the recently released "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House" by author Michael Wolff causing headaches for the administration, it's expected that the rift between both sides to only get worse a time moves forward.
