A three-year-old Special needs girl remains missing after she was forced to stay outside of her home on Saturday night when she refused to drink her milk. An Amber Alert was issued and then later canceled due to lack of new information, for the girl, identified as Sherin Williams.
Father arrested
Her father, 37-year-old Wesley Mathews, sent his daughter outside their home at around 3 a.m. They live in Richardson, Texas. According to police in the area, Mathews only reported Williams missing five hours after he left her outside their home. Mathews said he was trying to discipline Williams by telling the three-year-old girl to stand by a tree in their backyard.
He left her there for 15 minutes but when he returned to check on his daughter, she was nowhere to be found, Buzzfeed reported.
Mathews was charged with abandoning or endangering a child. He has since been released after he posted a $250,000 bond, Chron shared.
Search still ongoing
Despite lack of new information, police are still searching for Williams. Local officials have started working with the FBI and the U.S. Marshals Service in an attempt to get more assistance so as to locate the child quicker.
Officials have not released an official statement as to what their leads are regarding Williams’ possible whereabouts but they said that when they arrived at the home, coyotes were recently spotted in the alley behind the area where the girl was last seen by her father.
Police said, however, that there have been no indications Williams might have been harmed by the coyotes.
Also, Richardson police spokesman Sgt. Kevin Perlich pointed out that they want to know more about why the parents of Williams called them only five hours after she initially went missing. Perlich said they want that question answered because it did not seem like a normal reaction a parent would have if it involves a missing child.
The vehicles, cellphones, and laptops of the parents of Williams have been seized by authorities. Mathews was asked for a comment and said that he cannot say anything about the issue. His wife is reportedly very worried and depressed over their daughter going missing.
Williams was adopted from an orphanage
According to NBC, Williams was adopted by the Mathews family from an orphanage in India almost two years ago.
The parents of Williams have a biological daughter, who is four years old. The Texas Child Protective Services have already removed the sister of Williams from the home of the couple. The Texas Child Protective Services already had contact with the Mathews family in the past but details about that incident remain under wraps.
Williams is said to have developmental issues such as limited verbal communication skills. She was last seen wearing a pink top, black pants, and pink flip-flops. She is said to be around 3 feet tall and weighs 22 pounds. She has black hair and brown eyes.
