Martin "Pharma Bro" Shkreli is now headed behind bars after a Facebook attempt at humor didn't make a judge laugh. In response, Twitter quickly went viral in its response.
Shkreli behind bars
It was just over two years ago when Martin Shkreli became a household name for all the wrong reasons. The founder and former CEO of Turing Pharmaceuticals made headlines when he was responsible for increasing the price of the anti-parasitic drug Daraprim over night from $13.50 a pill to $750 a pill.
Just months later and Shkreli was arrested after an FBI investigation caused him to be indicted on federal charges, including securities fraud. This past summer, Shkreli was convicted on two counts of securities fraud, as well as an additional count to conspire to commit fraud. With legal trouble mounting, "Pharma Bro" also came under-fire for his threatening Facebook posts about Hillary Clinton, which included his vow to pay $5,000 to anyone who could give him a piece of the former Secretary of State's hair. As reported by CNN on September 13, a federal judge has decided that Shkreli belongs behind bars.
On Wednesday afternoon, Brooklyn federal court judge Kiyo Matsumoto ordered Martin Shkreli's previous bond of $5 million to be revoked, and threw him in jail. Matsumoto was not impressed with a letter written by Shkreli explaining that he was simply using social media to express his political views through an "awkward attempt at humor or satire." In response, Matsumoto labeled the former Turing CEO a "danger to society."
Martin Shkreli's post in question, which has since been deleted, was written back on September 4 in reference to Hillary Clinton's book tour. "On HRC’s book tour, try and grab a hair from her," Shkreli wrote, before adding that he would pay $5,000 to anyone who brings him Clinton's hair.
