Ever since the news broke that Donald Trump decided to fire James Comey as the head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Democrats and other critics of the president have spoken out. In response, Trump has increased his use of Twitter to get his message out.

Trump on Twitter

In the weeks leading up to Election Day last fall, James Comey became the number one enemy of the Democratic Party.

With less than a month to go before voters headed to the polls, Comey brought up the controversy surrounding Hillary Clinton and her use of a private email server during her time as Secretary of State under former President Barack Obama. Despite several investigations into the issue, Clinton was cleared of any wrongdoing, including from the FBI. Democrats argued that the timing of Comey's remarks caused speculation and increased doubt from voters, which they believe led to Donald Trump pulling off the historic upset win to become the 45th President of the United States. While Comey seemed like a positive for Trump during the election, he's been anything but that in recent weeks.

Comey had been the head man in charge of the investigation into Russia and their possible link to the White House, which all came crashing down after his termination on Tuesday night. As expected, Democrats were outraged that a sitting president fired the man who was currently investigating him, but Republicans didn't see it that way. Taking to his Twitter feed on May 10, Trump is attempting to turn the tables on the opposition.

In a Twitter post on Wednesday night, Donald Trump did his best to call out alleged "hypocrisy" from Democrats who had previously called for James Comey to be fired for his handling of the election, but now express opposition to the president's decision. "The Democrats should be ashamed.

This is a disgrace!" Trump tweeted, while using the hashtag "#DrainTheSwamp."

In addition to his comments, Donald Trump also attached a video montage of Democratic politicians and members of the mainstream media once calling for James Comey to be fired, but who have walked back those remarks over the last 24 hours.

Twitter reacts

Just minutes after sending out his tweet, Donald Trump was hit with heavy backlash on social media. "You are ridiculous," author Holly O'Reilly tweeted out, before adding, "You ARE the swamp, dude. And we'd be happy to drain you."

"Why even bother tweeting? Your approval rating is at 36%. 64% of Americans aren't even listening," filmmaker Adam Best wrote on his Twitter account.

"What changed is he started investigating you and you fired him. Honey I know you know this," TV writer Bess Kalb added. The negative reaction continued on Twitter, as the political divide in the United States was highlighted across social media.
