The Daily Mail published a story about Mrs. Trump during the US election campaign in 2016. First, they published it in the newspaper and later online. The article has a negative tone and reports allegations without any solid evidence to actually support them.
Mrs.Trump requested millions of dollars for the damage Daily Mail caused
The story Daily Mail published indicated that Melania Trump was not just a model.
They reported that she worked as an escort. Also, in the article, they claim that Melania met Donald Trump three years before they actually did and that they staged their first meeting. It also featured an old nude photo from the modeling career of Mrs. Trump.
After the article was published many people started talking about it and commenting on the content. Melania decided to file a lawsuit. She sued them in the US and in the UK. The amount she requested was very high, so the US lawsuit alone could bring her 150 million dollars worth of damages.
However, in the end, they settled for 3 million dollars, including damages and legal costs.
Mrs.Trump’s lawyer said that she will remain vigilant to protect her good name and reputation from those who make false and defamatory statements about her. He added that the allegations strike at the heart of the claimant’s personal integrity and dignity.
Daily Mail could've easily ended up like Gawker
Lawyers also said that the First Lady of the United States of America has had many opportunities to earn money. She had a very successful career as a professional model. In addition to modeling, Mrs. Trump has worked in PR and she even launched a couple of commercial brands in multiple product categories. Each of the products could have brought her millions of dollars because she is one of the most photographed women in the world.
In the end, everything turned out for the best. Melania won and proved to be someone who will not allow anyone to smear her reputation. Even Daily Mail got away pretty easily since Mrs. Trump’s lawyer, Charles Harder, was the one who caused the sale of Gawker.
