PlayStationLifeStyle reported that Marvel fans were okay with Insomniac's decision of not adding Venom in the game as they feel that the developers will save the Symbiote storylines for a possible sequel. Other fans, however, feel indifferent to not including the alien anti-hero in the story considering he is a major threat in Peter's life.

The new E3 2018 gameplay featured more Spider-Man villains such as Scorpion, Vulture, Rhino, Electro, and Shocker. They are joined by the game's principal antagonist Martin Li, but players discovered that he works for a higher power and they speculated that true mastermind behind them could be Norman Osborn, Kingpin, or Doctor Octopus.
