Square Enix is making a huge comeback, but this time on the action-adventure franchise "Tomb Raider." The Japanese gaming giant teased a new "Tomb Raider" video game this week.

According to Variety, the Japanese game publisher is working on a new entry in the franchise. The website learned the news when Square Enix made the big announcement on Thursday (Dec. 7). The company also posted a message on the game's official Twitter account, suggesting that a new "Tomb Raider" game is coming. However, the company did not provide any specifics about the project, which still on development stage.

Luckily, the gaming website Polygon managed to get some details from a Square Enix representative, who told Polygon that the publisher will not provide further details at this time beyond the announcement made on Twitter. The company is expected to share new details about the upcoming game next year.

About the game franchise

Originally created by the British gaming company Core Design, "Tomb Raider" (also known as "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider"), is an action-adventure video game series, formerly owned by the British publisher Eldos Interactive, then by Square Enix after it acquired the British gaming firm in 2009 and renamed it as Square Enix Europe.

The game focuses on a fictional English archaeologist and explorer named Lara Croft, who travels around the world to search for some ancient ruins and lost artifacts. Tomb Raider’s gameplay focuses on pure action-adventure and exploration of hostile environments, solving puzzles, and fighting enemies.

The game first entered game development in 1993 and its success has motivated the original developer Core Design to develop a new game annually over the next four years.

However, the British firm Core design has run into serious technical trouble and faced difficulties during the game development stage. The failure of the next game, "The Angel of Darkness," has prompted the original publisher Eldos Interactive to change game developers. Eldos decided to pick the American developer Crystal Dynamics, which has been the franchise’s primary game developer since then.

"Tomb Raider" was first released in 1996 on PC, Sony PlayStation, and Sega Saturn game consoles. In August 2017, Square Enix broke its silence and made a huge announcement that the "Shadow of the Tomb Raider" will be the third entry in the series and it will be announced before this year ends.

Japanese publisher to take new approach in its game rollout plan

As mentioned earlier by Polygon, the Japanese gaming company is taking a new approach with its rollout plan, and that’s the reason why it's very light in the game details. According to the website, the gaming company is getting some big changes. The goal is to shorten its marketing cycle.

Right now, there’s still no official word from Square Enix on which developer will make the new "Tomb Raider" game. The developer of the action-adventure games series, Crystal Dynamics, is currently working on a new Avengers game.
