"World of Warcraft" (WoW) is a massive multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). In it, you can create your own character avatar in first or third person just as with most MMORPG's. The game was first released in 2004 by Blizzard Entertainment, an American video game developer based in Irvine, California.
It is the fourth gameset in the Warcraft Universe. The Warcraft Universe was first introduced in 1994. With Warcraft: Humans & Orcs. World Of Warcraft picks up about where Blizzard's previous Warcraft release, Warcraft III, The Frozen Throne, left off, give or take a few years.
WoW, like all of its predecessors transpires within the Warcraft Universe in a medieval setting with elements of fantasy. The game was announced in September of 2001 and released in 2004 It has had six expansion packs since it’s inception. I will discuss a couple here. Stay tuned following this article! More are sure to come!
World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade
The Burning Crusade, the first expansion of World of Warcraft, was released in January of 2007. 3.53 million copies were sold in the first month. 2.4 million of those were sold on the day of release. Two new races with which to play the game were added in this expansion, the Draenei of the Alliance and the Blood Elves of the Horde.
The level cap was raised from 60, established in the original World of Warcraft, to 70.
In addition, a new planet called, Outland, was introduced with entirely new quests, dungeons, raids, creatures, and cities. For player versus player(Pvp) mode a new battleground, Eye of The Storm, was added for two brackets; one for characters between levels 61 and 69, and one for level 70.
World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King
The Wrath of The Lich King World of Warcraft expansion, released in November of 2008, sold 2.8 million copies on the first day, setting a record for the time period by being the fastest selling PC game. This expansion added a great deal of novel substance to the adventure including the new continent of Northrend.
The new cap level in this expansion is 80, up from 70. Players are expected to reach at least level 68 to play here. The game continues the story-line as have all the descendant games and expansions of the Warcraft legacy.
Set in a medieval time period it is flavored, again, with elements of fantasy found in previous Warcraft installments. The Lich King is the master of the Scourge. The Scourge was one of the four undead factions of the world, Azeroth.
The Lich King rules over it telepathically from the top of the Icecrown Glacier. Since its creation, this iteration of World of Warcraft has frequently been recognized by fans and critics as being WoW’s best expansion, and that is saying a lot when one considers just how expansive the Warcraft Universe is.
