Gamers were previously concerned when reports revealed Sony’s decision to decline cross-play between the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It was confirmed that Microsoft was open to the idea of inter-console gameplay but the other party was not. Currently, Sony has permitted the feature for their current-gen game system and PC. One of those games that actively use this feature is “Street Fighter V”. However, recent speculation suggests that there is a possibility of that being changed soon.
Microsoft confirms talks of cross-play with Sony
Players who have hoped for the cross-play feature to become a reality would be glad to hear some good news.
It seems that during Gamescom 2017, Aaron Greenberg, Microsoft’s marketing head, established that their company will discuss the feature with Sony. He pointed out that both companies are partners with a game called “Minecraft”. Greenberg said that they “would like to enable them to be part of that”. He probably meant to invite the Japanese game company to join their plans to enable cross-play with other platforms. So far, the American console maker is “hopeful that they’ll be supportive of it.”
‘Minecraft’ Better Together update
Aaron Greenberg’s reference about “Minecraft” talks about their plans to enable cross-play across different devices like Windows 10 PCs, compatible smartphones, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox One X.
Obviously, the only console missing from their announced list is Sony’s game system.
Nothing has been officially confirmed
It is revealed via their “Minecraft” FAQ that both parties have been in talks for a couple of weeks now. Sony had previously noted that they were worried about security for younger gamers. Analysts are confident that if Microsoft is able to meet Sony’s requests, the latter will most likely agree to a cross-play proposal for some games.
Gamers should hope that the two sides reach an agreement before the Better Together update for the above-mentioned game comes out.
Other games ready for cross-play
The requested feature is not only limited to Mojang’s game. Some games are actually ready for inter-console communication. Popular RC-controlled football game “Rocket League” is supposedly ready anytime.
“ARK: Survival Evolved" is also another game that can permit interplay with both consoles. Surprisingly, rumors even pegged Rockstar’s upcoming “Red Dead Redemption 2” as another big-name game that will support cross-play. We can only hope Microsoft and Sony reach an agreement, which could open up more opportunities for all gamers to play together in the future.
