Milkshakes are so easy to make, they call for a little more originality to make things interesting. Today's variation will be a Red velvet milkshake, complete with chocolate flavored ice cream for the base.
Making a red velvet one
This variation is basically a buttermilk milkshake where the milk is replaced with buttermilk for a creamier and tarty taste--great for an authentic "red velvet" touch.
And to complete that rouse, this recipe will also feature a cream cheese flavored whipped cream in place of the regular one as the topping similar to the cake.
The recipe
Topping Ingredients:
- 1 pack (8 oz) cream cheese, softened
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream
Milkshake Ingredients:
- 2 cups (4 scoops) chocolate ice cream, softened (bought or homemade)
- 1/2 cup buttermilk, cold
- Few drops red gel food coloring
Directions:
- Before making the topping, leave out the cream cheese to soften down in room temperature for a few minutes. When ready, combine the cream cheese, powdered sugar and vanilla extract in a bowl and whip them together using an electric mixer until smooth. In another bowl, whip the heavy cream in a until it forms stiff peaks. Fold the whipped cream into the batter until fully combined. Seal the bowl with cling and refrigerate.
- Before making the milkshake, leave out the chocolate ice cream to soften in room temperature for a few minutes.
- Combine the ice cream, buttermilk and two drops of the red food coloring in a blender. Blend the mixture for about 5 seconds. If the milkshake's red hue isn't to your liking, blend in more red food coloring by the drop until reaches the right hue. Also, if the consistency is too thick, add a little more milk. Or If it's too thin, add some more ice cream by the scoop.
- Seal and refrigerate the milkshake or serve immediately in jars or glasses with the topping and straws.
Serves: 2 glasses
Variations
- Blue velvet milkshake - Substitute blue gel food coloring for the red one.
- White chocolate milkshake - Substitute white chocolate ice cream for the regular one.
- Marble milkshake - Gently stir 1 cup (2 scoops) of vanilla ice cream into the finished milkshake but don't fully combine.
- Cake crumbs topping - Garnish the topping with crumbs from a red velvet cake.
- Mascarpone topping - Substitute mascarpone cheese for the cream cheese in the topping recipe.
- Sour cream topping - Omit the cream cheese, reduce the powder sugar to 2 tablespoons and add 1 cup of sour cream for the topping recipe.
