Some folks consider vegan ice cream a travesty that can never replace the real thing. In actuality, there's really no difference; it's just made without the dairy. Therefore you can use it the same way as the normal stuff--even as a component for other desserts. For example, try making a Vegan milkshake.

A vegan milkshake is made pretty much the same way as a regular milkshake. It is simply that he ice cream and milk in the recipe have to be non-dairy in composition. Like most of my vegan desserts, making this vegan milkshake is a breeze once you have the necessary substitutes in hand.

For the ice cream, you can simply swap it out for a non-dairy type available at your local grocery store. Of course, if the store isn't carrying it, don't panic. You can make your very own at home with this simple recipe.

As for the milk, there are many plant-based types to choose from. The preferred choice, however, is almond milk. It provides a creamy taste akin to a regular milkshake. From there, all one needs to add is some flavoring of choice, though This can already be taken care of by the non-dairy ice cream depending on its own flavoring.

The recipe

Whipped Cream Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup coconut cream, cold
  • 2 tsp powdered sugar
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Drink Ingredients:

  • 2 cup non-dairy vanilla ice cream, softened
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 tsp added flavoring (optional)

The Directions

  1. Before you prepare the vegan whipped cream, chill the coconut cream in the refrigerator for 8 hours hours. Pour coconut cream (unshaken), powdered sugar and vanilla extract in the bowl over an ice bath and whisk the mixture until it forms stiff peaks. Seal the bowl with cling and chill in the refrigerator until ready.
  2. Before preparing the milkshake, let the vegan ice cream soften in room temperature for several minutes.
  3. Combine the ice cream, almond milk and maple syrup (and added flavoring of choice if desired) in a blender and run for 5 seconds. If you want your milkshake thin, add more ice cream to the blend by the scoop. If you want it thick instead, add more milk.
  4. Divide the vegan milkshake evenly among two glasses, filling them up a 3/4 way up. Top each milkshake with the vegan whipped cream.
