Hollywood isn’t exactly discreet on how they feel about movie sequels. In fact, a good number of movies that came out the in past several years consist of sequels, prequels, and reboots. Perhaps financially speaking, making these type of movies is a smart move as Hollywood already knows which franchise would make the biggest sales at the box-office.
However, it’s a hit or miss situation in reality.
Reboots such as the 2016 “Ghostbusters” looked good on paper but bombed at the box-office, and sequels like the “Transformers” franchise continue to rake in the money even though critics pan every movie.
More movie sequels are reportedly in the works that you probably didn’t know, including follow-ups to “Coming To America,” “Passion of the Christ” and “The Accountant.”
‘Coming to America 2’
The 1988 classic comedy “Coming to America” is one of the most successful movies the actor-comedian Eddie Murphy has ever made in his career. So it’s no surprise people got very excited when it was hinted that there would be a sequel to the film.
According to TMZ, a hint of a sequel started when the Twitter account of the comedian posted a photo of Vanessa Bell Calloway, who played Imani Izzi in the film, in character with the caption “Coming to America sequel?”
The tweet has since been deleted, but sources close to Murphy confirmed that the actor is already working on the script for the sequel.
‘The Accountant 2’
This crime thriller film premiered on October 2016 which starred Ben Affleck in the lead role. The movie received mixed reviews from critics with an approval rating of 52% on Rotten Tomatoes but earned a respectable amount of money at the box-office.
Even though “The Accountant” was not the box office hit the studio wanted it to be, they still decided to make a follow-up.
According to a report by Deadline, Affleck is set to return to reprise his role as Christian Wolff in the sequel. In addition, fans of the movie would be glad to know that the director and screenwriter of the original film, Gavin O’Connor and Bill Dubuque respectively, are also in talks with the studio to return.
‘The Passion of the Christ 2: The Resurrection’
“The Passion of the Christ” is a biblical drama film that premiered in February 2004. The film drew quite a few controversies mostly because of the brutal depiction of Jesus Christ’s suffering, played by actor Jim Caviezel. Critics gave the film mixed reviews, but was a box-office hit, earning more than $600 million.
According to a report by The Hollywood Reporter, the film’s director, Mel Gibson, is working on a sequel with Randall Wallace writing the script. Wallace is best known for his work in “Braveheart.” Gibson stated that the sequel would focus on Jesus’s descent into hell, where he spent three days right before he returned to Earth.
