Movies have a long history of growing and advancing towards new trends. There are many movies available for online streaming, renting, and showing in theaters daily. Dystopian movies are not a genre but a class of cinema which contains a futuristic plot, much like sci-fi but not limited to one category. These movies can transport a viewer into another time, city, and lifestyle.

The possibilities of dystopia movies can vary widely.

What makes a dystopia film stand out compared to other movies?

The plot is usually questioning political, ethical, and social standards. What is right and wrong? Dystopia can be found in books, TV, and movies which address serious issues with a fictional atmosphere. The message can mirror current times and communicate to the viewers of what needs to change in the world of today. There are no rules of how far a story can go except for perhaps the viewer’s imagination.

Politics are often at the heart of these films. Why?

The country’s leaders have always been the debate regarding influence and leadership.

There has always been the question of how much freedom citizens actually are allowed to have. "V for Vendetta," a movie released in 2005, brings a great example of how dystopia and politics intersect. V opposes the ruling British government and takes drastic measure to speak up for individual's beliefs. The audience questions the decisions of V and whether he is an extremist or freedom fighter. The government has taken away civil liberty while the people are on standby, allowing their rights to be robbed. The movie is set in an alternate future, and V is the spokesperson to encourage the people to stand up for justice. The film tends to be controversial since V takes violent measures to have his voice be heard.

The message of the movie does not focus on violence; instead, the emphasis is on standing up for one’s rights against the government. Protestors since have sported the V mask in honor of speaking up for freedom during many rallies.

Dystopian movies have a significant impact on society and have become a coping mechanism when people feel lost. Anxiety, fear, and hopelessness reside with many when human rights and equality is sacrificed. Within the last few months, America has been protesting for basic rights to overthrow President Trump. It’s no wonder that dystopian movies and books are making a comeback. Hollywood is reportedly working on a new dystopian movie with President Trump in mind. Meanwhile, dystopian books are at an all-time high with people looking for the word of hope.

People want to be heard, and through Dystopian Fiction, a message is delivered. A small but influential message that is much needed when one feels powerless.
