While most PC games are played more comfortably with a keyboard and a mouse, such games as “Call of Duty” and “StarCraft,” sometimes a game controller can give users a more accurate control of the game. More importantly, the game controller is ideal for those who want to wear their nostalgia goggles and prefer to play retro games like “Super Mario World” on their PC’s SNES emulator.
Sure those people have the option of buying an additional game controller to play such games. However, if you already have a spare PS4 controller on-hand, the wisest thing to do is pair that controller to the PC to avoid additional costs.
With that said, this is how you connect your PS4 DualShock 4 controller to your PC.
What you will need to connect the controller
All you need is the controller, a USB cable, the DS4Windows software and your PC should be running Windows.
First, go to the official website of DS4Windows and download the program. Once downloaded, you are given the DS4Windows.zip file in which you have to extract.
Just choose a location for the extracted files, which are DS4Updater.exe and DS4Windows.exe.
The first file is used to keep the program’s drivers. You should run this program when you face any problems with the program.
To start installing the program, run the DS4Windows.exe file.
Setting up the DS4Windows program
When the setup starts, you will be asked where you wish your settings to be stored. It’s recommended just to use the default option.
After choosing this selection, just click “Install the DS4 Driver” option on the new window. This enables you to use the controller for Windows 8, 8.1 and 10. If you’re running Windows 7 and older, you are required to click on “Install 360 Driver.”
Two ways of connecting the controller to a PC
After the program is installed, you may now connect your controller via USB cable or Bluetooth connection.
To connect via USB cable, just plug your USB cable into the PC and controller, and Windows should detect the new hardware, and you’re done.
If you want to use the controller wirelessly, your PC should have a Bluetooth connection. Otherwise, you should buy a Bluetooth USB dongle to use the controller’s wireless capability. Push the home button on your controller, and it should now pair with you PC.
