The Nebraska Football team is coming off one of its best National Signing Days in quite a while. One little piece of drama that surface from signing day were rumors that the Huskers had hired a former defensive star to join the coaching staff. Now head coach mike riley is saying that while he did indeed talk to daniel Bullocks about the staff opening, he hasn't hired anyone. In fact, it appears the interview process for the job has just begun. That means that Bullocks appears to be the first candidate for the open Nebraska football position but isn't the only one.

What Nebraska football gets with Bullocks

Husker fans all over the country were obviously quite excited when they thought Daniel Bullocks returning to the Nebraska football fold was a foregone conclusion. Bullocks is one of the better defenders to come through the school in the last four decades. NU fans love it when one of the players they watched years ago comes back to coach the current regime. It was an added bonus that Bullocks might just be starting out in his coaching career, but he has already had some serious experience. In addition to serving this last season as an assistant with the Jacksonville Jaguars, the former Nebraska football defensive back has also been an assistant coach for Northern Iowa and Eastern Michigan.

Why Nebraska football fans should be glad the search isn't over

While Bullocks appears to be a real candidate and does have some coaching experience, he doesn't have a ton. Daniel Bullocks is still starting to get his career rolling. The way Mike Riley has handled his business over the past couple of months, it's pretty clear this isn't a time to be making sentimental hires just for the sake of making sentimental hires.

Riley fired two long-time assistants this winter and in both cases appears to have upgraded at the position. The loss of Brian Stewart gives the Nebraska football head coach a chance to upgrade again. That means he should be looking for someone he is sure can recruit and coach at the highest level. That may not be Daniel Bullocks just yet.
