Hell is still around in "The Vampire Diaries" season 8. While the Salvatores and co. found a way to kill Cade, there was a brilliant twist at the very end of the episode. After trapping Kai in the prison world and getting Elena's coffin (and Elena) back, Bonnie learned that there was someone else they should be afraid of. Someone else had taken over hell and there was only one person that could be: Katherine Pierce.

Does this mean Elena isn't returning?

Fans instantly took to social media to share their shock at the twist at the end of the episode.

They had hoped that hell would be closed, although with two episodes of the series left that seemed strange. Would the last two episodes really offer a happy ending for all? Of course not! This is "The Vampire Diaries," remember? Instead, fans learned that hell hadn't been destroyed and Katherine would return.

The big question was whether that would mean Elena wouldn't return. Fans know that Nina Dobrev is definitely returning for the series finale, but not which character she would play. Dobrev has played four different characters across "TVD" and "The Originals" and all are doppelgangers. It would certainly be possible for Dobrev to return as one of the other characters.

Could Nina Dobrev return to 'The Vampire Diaries' as two characters?

What's stopping Dobrev from taking up two roles? It's not like she hasn't done it before. In fact, in season 5 she played three different characters -- and then a character pretending to be a different character. She certainly had the chance to show off her acting skills.

Dobrev could -- and will most likely -- take on the role of two characters again in "The Vampire Diaries" series finale.

Fans have had a teaser of Elena's return in two videos. They may have only been 10 seconds long each, but they both appeared to be Elena waking up from her Sleeping Beauty coma. Julie Plec has also previously said that she wanted to see "this character to its end," and was talking about Elena at the time.

Chances are that Dobrev will take on two roles. While fans will see Elena return, they will also see the final demise of Katherine, as everyone finds a way to shut hell off for eternity. "The Vampire Diaries" returns on Friday and there are just two episodes left until the very end.
