A Thailand soccer team, on Monday night (July 2), was discovered, trapped in a cave, by a group of British divers. They saw the trapped soccer team and called for help. Now, they are currently being saved by rescue workers, who are still working to get them out.
The players on the soccer team weren’t able to spend time with their families to watch the World Cup. Instead, they had to endure weeks and weeks without any food or water stuck in a narrow cave.
Rescue workers are currently on the scene trying to save the trapped boys, and their coach, as well. They are looking for ways to help rescue them.
Cave expedition went wrong
According to USA Today, the assistant coach of the team, Ekapol Chanthawong, (25) took the team (The Wild Boars) down into the cave to explore it on June 23, following a soccer game.
Their exit overflowed, blocking the route and making it impassable, according to USA Today. The boys range in age from 11 to 16, and they are “malnourished and weak, but overall in good health.”
According to ABC, the name of the cave they went into was called Tham Luang Nang Non, a popular tourist attraction in Thailand.
This popular attraction is always fun for tourists in the area, and this team wanted to see what it had to offer.
Rescue mission still underway in Thailand
According to a report by ABC News, the divers, who found the trapped soccer team, took six hours to get through the caverns. They had equipment that could barely fit through the narrow caverns, which made it hard for them to reach the players. The rescue workers tried to pump out as much water from the cave as possible. They also left extra air tanks for the boys.
There is also a medical expert on duty, providing food and medical supplies. The boys do not have to worry as they are being looked at by medical personnel, as well.
Weather may also be a factor as there are forecasts of more rain in the area, on Sunday, according to a report from ABC News.
The rescue workers are concerned that another downpour might make it difficult for them to save the boys, flooding the area even more. This would ultimately delay the resumed effort.
As many people will be excited to see France and Uruguay play in the World Cup, Thailand won’t be able to watch it as they are still trapped in the cave, awaiting rescue. The rescue workers haven’t come up with a solution in terms of how to get the boys out yet, but the story is still developing. Stay tuned for more updates.
