If Princess Diana had not died almost twenty years ago, she would have turned 56 years old on July 1.
A private service was dedicated to her by her two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry. Duchess Kate was there with Prince George who will be four years old later this month, and his one-year-old sister Princess Charlotte. The grandchildren never met their grandmother, but their parents wanted them there to pay their respect.
Diana's brother Charles, 9th Earl Spencer attended the service along with his and Diana's two older sisters. They are Baroness Fellowes, 62, and Lady Sarah McCorquodale, 60.
The intimate service was conducted by Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury.
The event came after William and Harry recently spoke publicly about the impact their mother's death had on them. William said in a GQ interview that he is in a better place now than he has been for a long time where he can talk about his feelings openly.
Prince Harry also spoke openly about his feelings last month. He related that as a 12-year-old boy he had to walk a long way behind his mother's coffin as he was watched by thousands of people and millions more on television. He concluded that no child should be asked to do that.
Grave
Princess Diana's grave was rededicated on her birthday after the service that was given in her honor.
Her brother, Charles, will renovate the area and plant forget-me-nots and rhododendrons because they were her favorite flowers.
The world still remembers when Princess Diana was killed in a car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997, when she was only 36. Six days after her death, she was buried on the island of the Oval Lake at Althorp House on the Spencers' family estate in Northamptonshire in England.
Death
To commemorate the anniversary of her death, William and Harry will erect a statue in their mother's honor at Kensington Palace. At the time of her death, Prince William was 15, and Prince Harry was three years younger.
They said in a statement that their mother touched so many lives. They are hoping the statue will remind everyone about her when they visit the palace.
Princess Diana lives on through the work she did and through the work her children are still doing. The Diana Award is a charity organized to promote Princess Diana's belief in young people. It is a celebration for an entire year as a remembrance of her kindness, compassion, and service to the world particularly when young people are involved. The Diana Award is awarded to young people in the name of Diana, Princess of Wales.
