The competition among smartphone manufacturers is getting more intense, as Samsung is expected to roll out its foldable Galaxy X mobile device sooner than expected. The company’s president of mobile, Koh Dong-jin, told Bloomberg that its foldable handset is in the works and that it will hit the shelves next year
This could mean that smartphone enthusiasts will soon witness the reveal of the South Korean tech firm’s most elusive mobile device to date. Taking the words of the company’s executive into account, the tech firm will unveil the foldable Galaxy X smartphone sometime in 2018.
Nonetheless, according to India Today, there’s a possibility that Samsung may roll out the foldable device alongside its Galaxy S9, which is expected to be revealed in January 2018.
Handset’s model number
The Korean National Radio Research Agency (NRRA) leaked the folding smartphone’s model number SM-G888N0 a few weeks ago. According to Tech Radar, as the model number has not been designated to a mobile device in the tech firm’s lineup, it could correspond to the Galaxy X. While the smartphone has passed its radio and Bluetooth certification, this could also indicate the device’s imminent release.
The idea of a foldable mobile device is not new to the tech firm. In fact, Samsung made a deliberate display of a prototype of a predecessor to Galaxy X back in 2011.
Although the smartphone appeared to be chunky, it functioned somewhat.
Samsung might launch the Galaxy X on the market without a clear rival. The best current smartphones follow a typical design, such as Samsung’s S8, S8 Plus and the recently launched Note 8. The foldable handset would be the first mobile device of its kind, which will give Samsung a unique edge in the smartphone industry.
S9 features
The features of the tech company's foldable mobile device are scarce, but the Galaxy S9 is expected to feature an improved dual camera system, allowing its user to capture 1080p slow motion videos at 1,000 frames per second. The S9 will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 system on chip (SoC). The smartphone is expected to feature a 5.8-inch edge-to-edge curved Infinity Display.
However, from the perspective of a consumer, the foldable smartphone seems to be more exciting compared to S9. The Galaxy X could prompt a number of potential buyers to hold on to their current mobile devices until it will be available on the market.
