It might not be apparent to some, but High Dynamic Range (HDR) is more important than 4K, and YouTube has come to realize this. While the video streaming platform has long supported 4K, HDR took longer due to devices not having the hardware to make it possible.

Hardware is still limited today, but things much better than they were two years ago due to the rise of PlayStation 4 Pro, the Xbox One S, and the upcoming Xbox One X.

With the technology slowly finding a home in the consumer market, YouTube is finally at the forefront with support for HDR, and there are several mobile devices ready to take advantage of what the streaming platform has to offer.

Supported mobile products

Now then, the Samsung Galaxy S8 is probably the most prominent here due to brand popularity. Already, the device plays Netflix content in HDR, and will do the same with via the updated Youtube App. Not to mention, it’s bigger brother, the Galaxy Note 8, is capable of doing the same, but on a larger screen.

Folks on Reddit have spotted the YouTube app update since a few days ago, and they have reported that it supports resolutions of up to 1140p at 60 frames per second. Interestingly enough, another publication claims they can only access high dynamic range content on YouTube at up to 1080p and 60 frames per second.

The search giant claims the new update also supports the Google Pixel, LG V30, Sony Xperia XZ Premium.

There’s no word at the moment as to when other devices will get the update, but rest assured, Google is working to make things happen as quickly as possible.

HDR outside of mobile

The best HDR products are no doubt televisions, but they are quite expensive. As it stands right now, most folks in the United States and around the world will find it difficult to jump on the HDR bandwagon as long as prices are high.

4K TV prices have been coming down drastically, especially with the new video game consoles. However, if one wants to get 4K a lot cheaper, then the best option is to invest in a computer monitor. These devices are much more affordable, though one must be content with the smaller display.

The primary reasons to consider computer monitors is due to their smaller intake of electricity.

Additionally, these devices tend to take up less space in the house. Furthermore, they are easier to move around compared to a television, and that’s super important if you’re a person who doesn't like to game in a single place.
