A lot of people were excited when Hmd Global announced the return of the Nokia brand. So far, the company has already announced several smartphones all powered by Google’s Android OS. Additionally, they have recently brought back the retro Nokia 3310 with a new look and a colored screen.

Nostalgia aside, the company helmed by ex-employees of the Finnish smartphone manufacturer has already offered an entry-level and a mid-range model. Today, the top-shelf flagship spot has been delegated to the Nokia 8. Their newest model is expected to take on other brands as they aim to dominate the mobile phone market.

Nokia 8 design and construction

Being no stranger to quality, HMD Global’s Nokia 8 is made with a uni-body machined from a single block of 6000 series aluminum. Its display cover is made and protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass 5 panel. It measures 151mm x 73.7mm x 7.9mm and comes with an IP54-rated protection against minor splashes.

Its rear features a vertically-mounted dual camera along with its flash and IR range finder. Its front side holds a selfie camera on top with earpiece set just above its proximity sensor. The bottom half houses a fingerprint reader in between two capacitive Android buttons.

The Nokia 8’s SIM tray can be accessed on the left side of its frame. The right portion holds a volume rocker and power button.

The top side only bears a 3.5mm audio jack, while the bottom frame is populated by a USB C port, a speaker grille, and a primary microphone pinhole.

Hardware details and camera

This flagship model packs an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 along with a 4GB RAM. Its internal storage is 64GB with an option to expand via a microSD card (up to 256GB).

It uses a 5.3-inch IPS LCD touchscreen that flaunts a 2560 x 1440 QHD display resolution. The unit is powered by a 3,090mAh battery and natively runs on Android 7.1.1 Nougat.

HDM Global’s high-end model aims to impress users with its imaging capabilities courtesy of Zeiss optics. The main cameras are two 13-megapixel units with OIS and a dual-tone LED flash.

Meanwhile, selfies are delegated to another 13-megapixel shooter up front. It also showcases OZO spatial audio technology that enhances the captured video’s sound.
