With only a few days left for the official launch of the Android O, OnePlus has given shock treatment. According to Oliver Z, product head, the Oneplus 3 and 3T will not receive any Android updates after Android O. The devices will receive the required Update to Android O and the monthly batch of updates as and when it is made available. However, the handsets will not receive Android P update expected to release in 2018.
Security updates availability
Oliver took to the official OnePlus forum and announced the news in the form of a Q&A. He also answered several questions about the OnePlus three series.
Even though the Android O will be the final batch of Android updates for the OnePlus three flagship, the company will continue to release new security patch updates regularly. Moreover, the company will also provide support for individual applications bundled with the phone including repair services.
Join beta program
Meanwhile, OnePlus will start Android O open beta program for the OnePlus five after the release of the update for the OnePlus 3 and 3T. Hence, customers need to wait until December 2017 or early 2018 to receive a new Android update for the fifth edition. It was around in this time frame the company pushed Android 7.0 Nougat update in 2016.
To access the beta updates, users need to join the beta program, which is available in closed, open and official release modes.
The purpose of the program is to fetch feedback in the form of bug reports and feature requests such as new improvements directly from the user community.
Expect August update shortly
As of this writing, OnePlus has been releasing open beta updates for OnePlus 3/3T on a monthly basis. The company is gearing up to launch August security patch for the two handsets, which will be followed by Oxygen OS 4.5 update within a span of the next two months.
Previously, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau revealed to the media that the Android O updates for the OnePlus 3 and 3T will be rolled out by the end of 2017. This development has been confirmed by the company officials over Reddit as well. It is to be noted that the company is pushing beta updates for the OxygenOS regularly.
OnePlus three status
After the release of OnePlus 3 in July 2016, the company discontinued it in December to pave the way for the OnePlus 3T. The company recently revealed that the 3T model will also be removed from the production line globally. However, the Pete Lau-owned company will continue to release software updates for the two handsets including periodic updates after the release of Android O.
The monthly updates after the release of the Android O platform will also be available except Android P, which will not be available in 2018. The news brings disappointment to users since they have invested a whole lot of money to purchase the devices. In addition to OnePlus 5, the company is also selling OnePlus 3T in US, China, and India via various retail channels. It remains to be seen as to how long the company will sell the OnePlus 3T.
