Google took everyone by a surprise when the search giant launched its Pixel and Pixel Xl smartphones. The aforementioned smartphones — without a doubt — were the major highlights of the technology market in 2016. Now the firm is hoping the same deed this year through the launch of its successors. Google is expected to officially launch these smartphones by the end of this year. Moreover, the devices are speculated to come with a major design overhaul and upgraded features. Much to the disappointment of its fans, the smartphones won’t be priced cheaper.
Here’s all there is to know regarding Google’s upcoming smartphones.
HTC is making Pixel 2
In the initial stages, there was much debate upon what these successors will be called. Several names including ‘Walleye,’ ‘Muskie,’ and ‘Taimen’ emerged online, however they lacked credibility. Moreover, many even speculated as to which company was going to manufacturer Google’s upcoming smartphones. Last year, HTC took up the job of producing the devices, however; this year it seems like LG will be doing the same. There are also chances that both companies might be involved in the making of Google Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 smartphones.
Design of the Google's flagship smartphones
This too remains unclear at the moment.
Moreover, Google is also apparently exploring the idea of going completely bezel-less with its upcoming Pixel and Pixel XL 2 smartphones. The chances of Google bringing such a massive design overhaul are high, as the firm also needs to deliver tough competition to Samsung’s Galaxy S8, S8 Plus, and Note 8 smartphones along with Apple’s iPhone 8 flagships.
Coming to the display of the smartphone, Google is expected to integrate a 5-inch screen with its Pixel 2 and a 5.5-inch screen with its Pixel XL smartphone. There were several reports that revealed Google’s plans to invest in OLED panels by LG. The firm apparently invested a round figure of $880 million in the displays. Therefore, it is safe to assume that the Google Pixel 2 smartphones will sport an OLED display.
Apart from this, the Google Pixel 2 smartphones are expected to be powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 835 SoC. If this turns out to be true then the upcoming devices will fall in direct competition with Samsung’s Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus smartphones. However, the question of exactly how Google plans on making the experience different than that of Samsung still rattles most fans. Google’s camera specifications are going to be the primary highlight of the smartphones. One of the devices will most probably pack a dual rear camera setup with 12MP sensors. However, none of the above-given information has been confirmed by the company as yet.
