Rumors are rife that the Galaxy S9, alleged successor of the newly-launched Galaxy S8 smartphone will come with the Exynos 9810 SoC. The processor will come with a modem for CDMA support. It is not clear whether Samsung has an understanding with Qualcomm regarding patents pertaining to CDMA, or it decided to integrate support for the same in the impending chip for a different reason, which is best known to the company.

Galaxy S9 to come with latest Samsung processor?

Sources familiar with the matter shared that the 2018 flagship smartphones from Samsung will be named as the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus.

Additionally, they also stated that the U.S. edition of the Galaxy Note 8 will be carrying the impending Snapdragon 836 SoC. The Galaxy S8 series currently houses the Snapdragon 835.

Given that U.S.-based network operators such as Verizon, Sprint, and US Cellular all use the CDMA technology that is nearly completely owned by the chipmaker via numerous patents, Samsung generally equips its U.S. bound devices with Qualcomm manufactured chipsets as they come with CDMA support. Rumors of a strained relationship between Samsung and Qualcomm were in the air earlier in 2017. Some sources even claimed that Qualcomm was resorting to unwarranted licensing necessities to prevent the South Korean OEM from selling its Exynos processors to other companies.

Despite rumors of tension, both Samsung and Qualcomm collaborated and manufactured the Snapdragon 835 chip developed using Samsung’s 10nm FinFET process node.

Exynos 9810 coming soon?

Rumors of Exynos 9810 SoC debuting soon had surfaced this spring although, at the time, it was believed that it would be fueling the Galaxy S8 series smartphones.

Given that the international editions were equipped with the Exynos 8895, there is a possibility that the sources got the name correct except for the application. As of now, one can only hope for Samsung to let out some news about its upcoming chipset, especially considering that its chip-making division seldom keeps developments under wraps for a long time.

Rumors about the next-gen handset

According to Korean publication The Bell, the Galaxy S9 is rumored to have the codename Star, while the bigger edition of the smartphone has been given the codename Star 2. The report also stated that Samsung has started the development of its next flagship several months earlier than scheduled. Thus, the upcoming next generation Samsung flagship can either get an early launch or is coming with new features.
