On Wednesday, May 18, Bloomberg reported that Apple may announce an update for its laptop line-up during its annual app developer’s conference, i.e. WWDC, which is slated to be held in early June. This upgradation would not only help the Cupertino-based company counter competition from Microsoft, but may also revive the declining iPad sales. According to sources familiar with the matter, it seems that Apple plans to launch three new laptops, one each for MacBook, MacBook Pro, and Macbook Air.
Three new versions of MacBook?
People in the know, who requested anonymity, stated to Bloomberg that the new iteration of the MacBook Pro is slated to come equipped with a faster Kaby Lake processor from Intel.
The sources also stated that the company is currently developing a new 12-inch MacBook with a faster Intel chip. Apparently, the company is also contemplating to update the 13-inch MacBook Air with a new, faster processor as the sales of the company’s most inexpensive laptop surprisingly continues to stay strong. However, Apple and Intel both declined to comment on these rumors.
MacBook lineup latest updates
The sources also let on that looks-wise the updated MacBook Pro won’t sport a drastically different design compared to the latest model in the market. The key differences will come in terms of internal architecture. Apple, in the past few years, has been criticized by many Mac loyalists for not giving enough attention to its laptop line or making very small and inconsequential changes to the hardware or design.
It has been seven years since MacBook Air got a new design. The latest MacBook Pro available in the market was given a Touch Bar keyboard strip to gain quick access to apps along with a larger trackpad and fingerprint log-in sensor as an upgrade. The 12-inch MacBook model was last updated in spring 2016 and was given a Rose Gold color option.
The MacBook Air, on the other hand, has not received any kind of speed boost since the last two years.
Apple lags behind in desktop updates
Apart from the Mac updates, the company has also lagged behind in terms of its desktop lineup. Apple has not announced any hardware upgradation since its June 2013 developer conference, during which it updated the MacBook Air.
However, the Cupertino-based company has promised iFans that it will roll out major upgrades for the Mac Pro and iMac desktop systems. Apple’s Mac category of products accounts for just 11 percent of the company’s annual sales which amounts to a total of $216 billion.
