The Nebraska football team's coaching staff has always known Rahmir Johnson has some blazing speed. That is obviously one of the reasons the Huskers went after him as they did in the 2019 recruiting cycle.
Even when you know a thing, it's always nice to be reminded. The New Jersey product did just that over the weekend as he lit up the scoreboard and stood atop the standings in the New Jersey Catholic Track Conference.
Incoming Nebraska football running back sets school record
Rahmir Johnson already held the Bergen Catholic School record for the 200 meter indoor. On Sunday he added the 300-meter indoor record to his resume. Not only did the Huskers signee manage to break the old school record, which had stood for a decade, but he did it in impressive fashion, posting a time of 35.31 compared to the old record of 35.74.
If that level of speed wasn't impressive enough, earlier in the day, the Huskers running back commit showed the entire state he was faster than then when it comes to the 55-meter dash. He took home the state title on Sunday, posting a time of 6.55 seconds.
The most eye-popping fact about that comes when you realize that wasn't even the best time he posted in that event this season.
Rahmir Johnson continues a recent trend for Husker signees
While the ability to run down a track faster than most people can even dream of doesn't necessarily mean the Cornhusker commit is going to excel at football, it does continue what has become an interesting trend for players Scott Frost and company are bringing to Lincoln.
When the coaching staff has talked about wanting to bring quite a bit more speed to the roster, they weren't just blowing smoke. Current Nebraska wide receiver Jaron Woodyard is competing in track this winter for the Huskers as well.
He came to Lincoln through the JUCO route being known as someone who had truly blazing speed.
It's something fans hope to see on the football field more in 2019.
It's not just wide receivers and running backs that are showing what they can do on the track either. Nebraska football 2020 commit, Logan Smothers, a quarterback out of Alabama showed what he can do in his own state's high school championships this weekend.
None of these things mean that Rahmir Johnson, Jaron Woodyard or Logan Smothers are going to be successes when it comes to the Huskers. It does show that the staff has identified a key ingredient to success on the football field.
There is also the fact that these players are all showing championship level performances in multiple sports. That could bode well for the Nebraska football program when all is said and done.
