The Nebraska basketball program has reportedly lost one of their recent junior college transfer players. The big news arrives with the season about a month away, and the Cornhuskers looking towards some success. As of this report, the team is ranked within the top 25, which has Huskers fans excited about their chances in the coming season. Here are the latest details on their lost transfer player Dedoch Chan.
Nebraska basketball loses Chan, per source
According to Rivals and Big Red Today, a source has indicated that forward Dedoch Chan will not be a part of the Nebraska basketball program. Chan, a 6-foot-8 215-pound prospect previously played for Mississippi Gulf Coast. As a freshman, he averaged 17 points, 8.6 boards, and 1.5 assists per game. He earned a spot on the first-team All-Region 23 for his efforts too.
While Chan had interest from other schools, Nebraska University was the only "high-major" offer he received. Chan made a visit to the campus back in early August and committed then. Some of the other schools that recruited him included Alabama-Birmingham, Pacific, McNeese State, and Montana State.
Three years ago, Dedoch Chan made headlines when he transferred from Albert Lea to John Marshall, as seen in the video clip below.
The news arrives just a few days after former Nebraska Cornhuskers basketball player Tyronn Lue was fired from his head coaching job with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Chan's departure, team outlook
As of right now, the Nebraska Cornhuskers hold the No. 25 spot in the USA Today Sports preseason men's basketball coaches poll. The team finished 22-11 last season and has several talented frontcourt players in senior Tanner Borchardt and freshman Brady Heiman.
Sources indicate that this won't be a major blow to the Nebraska basketball team. In fact, Chan was not expected to play a major role in their rotation based on the other players mentioned.
He was not even a participant in the team's recent scrimmage at Iowa State, so he was most likely going to be unable to get much of a spot.
Even with Chan's departure, it also can open things up for a future prospect. The Nebraska basketball program has been actively recruiting prospects for 2020, but their scholarships were full. Chan leaving will open up one of those scholarship spots, as well as a 2019 scholarship for the program.
Last weekend, the school welcomed Cleveland's John Hugley for an official visit. Hugley would be a part of the 2020 Nebraska recruiting class if he decides to commit.
While Nebraska football is building towards a winning future, so is the Huskers hoops program. The team's basketball fans are certainly looking forward to more prospects visiting and choosing to represent the "Big Red" mission to cut down the nets in March Madness.
