Ireland showed some excellent temperament with the bat in the second innings after following-on, as they ended day four of the Dublin Test with a score of 319 for 7. They have extended the lead to 139 runs, and with one day still to go, they would hope to at least get a draw rather than a loss in their inaugural Test match.
Day 5 live updates:
Pakistan 36/3 in 10 overs.
Day 5 - Session 1: Pakistan require another 124 runs with 7 wickets remaining
The day didn't start as brightly for the Irish boys as they would've hoped.
They lost Ed Joyce (43 runs) and Andrew Balbirnie (zero runs) in back to back overs in the first thirty minutes of the day. Mohammad Amir then sent both Niall O Brien (18 runs) and Captain William Porterfield (32 runs) to the dressing room as Ireland was struggling at 123/4 going into lunch.
In the post-lunch session, Ireland lost Paul Stirling (11 runs) after his short stay. Kevin O Brien and Stuart Thompson stabilized Ireland innings. Both of them combined to produce one of the best partnerships by an Irish batting duo ever. Together they put on 114 runs for the seventh wicket.
When Thompson finally got out for 53 runs to Shadab Khan in the final session, the score stood at 271 for 7, as the lead had been stretched to 91 runs.
Kevin O Brien soon reached his ton and became the first Irish cricketer to score a test century, and that too in his debut match.
Pakistani bowlers didn't get any more wickets in the last session barring the one of Thompson, as the Irish team found themselves at 319 for the loss of 7 wickets at stumps on Day Four in the Dublin test.
With the lead of 139 runs in the bank and Kevin O Brien still unbeaten on 118, Ireland sense a little hope for victory. It can only be possible if they can restrict Pakistan on the final day under target which they present.
