The MLB Power Rankings heading into Week 3 have once again seen some serious changes. The New York Mets and Boston Red Sox are red hot. The Arizona Diamondbacks and Pittsburgh Pirates continue to surprise but nobody right now is hotter than the Los Angeles Angels.
Angels the new No. 1
The Los Angeles Angels' roster looks a lot different in 2018 than it did in 2017, and so far the new editions have been a major part of why LA is playing its best baseball in years.
According to an MLB.com report, while Mike Trout is still the straw that stirs the drink for the Angels, newcomers Justin Upton, Shohei Ohtani, Ian Kinsler and Zack Cozart have all made an immediate impact for the Halos.
Through the first two and a half weeks of the season, Los Angeles leads all of baseball with 103 runs scored and they have given up just 55. The season is very young, but this team has the look of a runaway freight train. At 13-3, the Angels currently hold a three-game lead over Houston in the American League West.
Dodgers, Nationals continue to slide
Buyer beware! The high priced payrolls of the LA Dodgers and Washington Nationals aren’t panning out in 2018 - at least not yet. Both teams are 3-7 in their last 10 games and neither has come close to living up to their high expectations this season. That can all change in a week’s time, however, the way the Mets and D-backs are playing, neither squad wants to fall too far behind the division leaders, even if it is still April.
Below are the newest MLB Power Rankings.
Week 3 Top 10
- L.A. Angels -- Is this finally the year of the Angels?
- NY Mets -- They once again have the look that took them to the Fall Classic in 2015.
- Arizona Diamondbacks -- Still a great team even without JD Martinez.
- Pittsburgh Pirates -- They are proving that they will be a contender in the NL Central.
- Boston Red Sox -- 9-1 in their last 10 games and opening up a lead in the AL East, for Boston’s big payroll it is World Series or bust.
- Houston Astros -- They are struggling just a bit, but still are very dangerous.
- Philadelphia Phillies -- 8-2 in their last 10 and winners of six straight, the Phillies are looking good.
- Toronto Blue Jays -- Another rising team from last week to this week, the Jays are 7-3 in their last 10 and keeping pace in the AL East.
- Minnesota Twins -- They lead the AL Central and they play solid fundamental ball.
- New York Yankees -- The Bombers are barely holding onto a top 10 spot.
