tim tebow draws a crowd no matter where he goes. However, this season, he may be drawing the biggest crowds of his professional life - if New York Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson is correct about his prediction for the former Heisman trophy winner.
It’s go time
New York Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson knew he would take a lot of heat for taking a chance on Tim Tebow, but he doesn’t care.
In fact, Alderson believes Tebow is going to play in the major leagues one day and the Mets want to get him there as quickly as possible.
"Somebody asked me whether I think he'll be a major league player at some point," Alderson said Sunday. "I think he will play in the major leagues.That's my guess. That's my hope."
Alderson indicated that he is pleased with the progress Tebow has made since the team signed him in Septemeber of 2016. The Mets are going to press Tebow this season to see what he can do. Early indications of that are simply in the fact that Tebow is on the team's list of non-roster invitees that will workout with the Mets for the entire spring.
In his one full season playing minor league ball, which includes 19 games in 2016 with the Arizona fall league, Tebow has hit eight home runs and collected 52 RBIs. He is only hitting at a .226 clip, however, but, as Alderson mentioned, he has made great strides during his time playing for the Mets system.
Last season, Tebow split his playing time between the Class-A Columbia Fireflies and the High-A St. Lucie Mets.
Football still an option?
The odds of Tim Tebow heading north with the New York Mets after spring training ends are very slim, however, if he heads to Double or Triple-A and is impressive then being called up may be very realistic. If Tebow doesn't get the call this season, could he be willing to start thinking about football once again?
The XFL may be interested in signing Tebow, and WWE/XFL head man Vince McMahon made that clear in his press conference earlier this month. McMahon specifically said in a press conference that Tim Tebow is a player they’d want to join the XFL. McMahon mentioned a few other players he would love to see suit up in his reborn league in 2020, but when speaking of Tebow, McMahon seemed very interested.
Tebow has been asked several times about his interest in playing for the XFL, and while he didn't dismiss the idea, he said he is only interested in what he can do right now as a member of the New York Mets organization.
Spring training games begin this week and once again for better or worse, all eyes will be on Tim Tebow.
