For the first time in 20 years, the United States women's hockey team has won a gold medal at the Winter Olympics. In response, Donald Trump and his daughter decided to give their thoughts.

Trump on Team USA

With the 2018 Winter Olympics coming to a close, all eyes were on the women's gold medal game between Team USA and Canada. As the game headed to overtime, the world watched on the edge of their seats.

After the overtime ended with a 2-2 tie, it was time for a penalty shootout, which also remained at 2-2. It was then time for a sudden-death shootout, where American Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson was able to push the puck by Canada's goalie Shannon Szabados for what ended up being the game winning goal. It was the first time that the women's Team USA hockey team had won the gold medal since 1998, as the Americans ended up on top in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

In response to the big win, Donald Trump offered his praise during his latest tweet on February 22.

"On behalf of an entire Nation, CONGRATULATIONS to the U.S. Women's Hockey Team on winning the GOLD!" Trump tweeted out. This was the first time that the president has commented about the Winter Olympics on his social media account, though Mike Pence was involved in controversy early on after openly gay American figure skater Adam Rippon spoke out against the vice president due to his stance on LGBT issues.

Ivanka's reaction

In addition to the president tweeting out his remarks, first daughter Ivanka Trump also chimed in. "Congratulations to Team USA Women's Hockey for an incredible win – the first GOLD in 20 years. This team shows us what we can achieve when we work together, never give up, never give in, and ALWAYS believe in ourselves and in each other," Ivanka tweeted, before adding, "See you in PyeongChang tomorrow!"

Twitter backlash

Following the Trump tweets about Team USA, critics of the president made sure to sound off with thoughts of their own.

"You gonna give them all guns too?" a Twitter user asked.

"No one cares what you think while kids are dead in Florida because you protect horrible laws and people," Mark Bland tweeted. "I thought you’d be more happy for the golf team," a tweet read with sarcasm. "Oh so now you’re congratulating women just for doing well in sports?!

Sexist pig!" a follow-up tweet stated. "On behalf of the entire nation, you're a disgrace and embarrassment to America," an additional posted noted..

"You're an embarrassment to this country," a social media user remarked. "I hope they refuse to visit you in the White House. Can't stomach another shi**y photo of you in your stupid pose," yet another tweet went on to read. Despite Trump's tweet being harmless, those who oppose the administration are showing no signs of holding back from their criticism anytime soon.
