NFL: Five most intriguing Week 3 matchups

Week 3 started off with an entertaining game on Thursday Night that very few were expecting in the Rams 41-39 win over the 49ers.

What is surprising is that even though this is just Week 3, there is only one game between undefeated teams. That game tops the list of the five most intriguing Week 3 matchups.

5. Kansas City Chiefs at San Diego Chargers

The Chiefs have arguably been the NFL's best team after two weeks, with wins over the Patriots and Eagles.

Much like last season, the Chargers keep losing close games as they have only been outscored by five points in their losses to the Broncos and Dolphins.

Many will look to see if Kansas City's duo of quarterback Alex Smith and rookie running back Kareem Hunt can continue their superb play. Smith has thrown for 619 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions in the team's first two games. Hunt has 229 rushing yards, 126 receiving yards, and five touchdowns in a start to a career that has been basically unprecedented.

Both C. J. Anderson and Jay Ajayi have been able to get it going on the ground against San Diego's defense, which has allowed 251 rushing yards in their first two games.

If defensive ends Melvin Ingram and Joey Bosa (combined four sacks) can get sustained pressure on Smith, it may allow Phillip Rivers a chance to guide his team to an upset.

4. Houston Texans at New England Patriots

Both teams enter the game at 1-1 in what is a rematch of last season's divisional round playoff game, one that saw the Patriots win 34-16. The game could have been much closer as the Texans hung around, but then-Texans quarterback Brock Osweiler had a miserable performance throwing three interceptions.

The #1 yardage defense a season ago, Houston's defense struggled in Week 1 against the Jaguars but bounced back nicely in their 13-9 win over the Bengals. It was rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson's first career start, and he scored the only touchdown on a highlight reel 49-yard run.

Keep an eye on J. J. Watt in this game as he has yet to record a sack in Houston's first two games.

The Patriots moved to 1-1 after their dominant 36-20 victory over the Saints. After struggling in Week 1, Tom Brady looked more like one of the all-time greats again as he went 30/39 for 447 yards and three touchdowns. He wasn't nearly as sharp in New England's playoff matchup against Houston last season, as he completed less than half his passes and threw two interceptions.

3. Seattle Seahawks at Tennessee Titans

Both teams enter their Week 3 tilt at 1-1. The Seahawks still sport one of the NFL's best defenses but have only scored 21 total points. After an opening week loss to the Raiders, Tennessee handily defeated the Jaguars 37-16 in Week 2.

A lot of people have been talking about how poor the Giants offensive line has been, but Seattle's hasn't been much better. Russell Wilson has been sacked six times in their first two games and is only completing 56.1% of his passes as he has been unable to have ample time in the pocket.

The Titans defense sacked Blake Bortles twice last week and forced him into three turnovers (two interceptions, one fumble). DeMarco Murray is listed as questionable for Tennessee, but Derrick Henry may have gotten his fair share of carries in this game regardless. He is averaging more than 2.5 Yards Per Carry through two games than Murray (5.9 to 3.3).

2. Oakland Raiders at Washington Redskins

On Sunday Night Football, the Raiders (2-0) will meet up against the Redskins (1-1) in the nation's capital.

The Raiders are coming off a 45-20 victory against the overmatched Jets, while the Redskins were able to get in the win column by defeating the Rams 27-20.

Oakland's 71 points in the first two weeks are the most in football. They have yet to turn the ball over, are fifth in yards per pass attempt, and are third in yards per rush attempt. Derek Carr has thrown five touchdown passes, three of which went to Michael Crabtree in last week's game.

While Marshawn Lynch has looked good in his first two games out of retirement, Washington has done well against the run early on, allowing 77.5 rushing yards per game on just 3.4 yards per carry. They have also forced four turnovers on the season, but unfortunately for them, have also turned the ball over to their opposition four times.

1. Atlanta Falcons at Detroit Lions

Despite just two full weeks in the books, this is the only matchup between two undefeated teams. A Super Bowl hangover has not been seen by Atlanta, who had an impressive showing in a 34-23 win over the Packers last week. The Lions shut down the Giants offense in their 24-10 Week 2 victory.

Atlanta's defense has brought the opponent's quarterback down for a sack seven times in their first two games, but are now without 2016 NFL sack leader Vic Beasley for at least a month due to a hamstring tear. Matt Ryan has thrown the ball just as impressively as he did while winning the MVP last season and is averaging 9.9 yards per pass attempt.

The Lions were able to sack Eli Manning five times last week, and the previous week they forced Carson Palmer into three interceptions. Through two games, they have also been much more involved with establishing the run averaging 29.5 attempts per game (21.9 last season).
