Memories of their home team rallying from 28-3 to win the Super Bowl against the Atlanta Falcons brought smiles to Patriots fans. Those smiles were short lived. The Kansas City Chiefs pounced on the Tom Brady and made him look like an average quarterback. Running back Kareem Hunt broke a new NFL rookie record with yards rushing and receiving.

Alex Smith threw four touchdown passes, while Brady threw none. Here is the lowdown of a game that the Chiefs owned.

Alex Smith Helps Kareem Hunt Sets New Rookie Record

All the talk of Patrick Mahomes replacing Alex Smith improved Smith’s game. According to NFL.com, Smith passed for 368 yards and four touchdowns. Rookie running back Kareem Hunt was his go-to man. After fumbling the ball early in the game, Kareem Hunt redeemed himself. He broke an NFL rookie record by posting the most yards in an NFL debut game for a rookie with 246 yards, according to NFL.com. Deep balls to Hunt burned the Patriots defense.

At the end of the day, the Patriots’ defense allowed 537 yards, the most yards ever at home during the Bill Belichick era. Cornerback Stephon Gilmore got his wish of being on National television more, as he blew a deep ball coverage that resulted in a Kansas City touchdown.

Tom Brady Struggles

Tom Brady did not have good numbers. In fact, Brady posted zero touchdowns. The Super Bowl champion misfired and threw balls away. A drop by Rob Gronkowski in the end zone and flubbed passes by former Buffalo Bill Chris Hogan created a nightmare on offense for Brady. The quarterback posted a dismal 44 percent completion rate and only connected with his receivers 16 times, as stated by NFL.com. In the final five minutes of the 4th quarter, the Chiefs denied any rally for the Patriots.

They sacked Brady three times and forced them to punt. Not having wide receiver Julian Edelman on the field seemed to knock Brady off his offensive rhythm.

Chiefs’ Defense Says “No” on 4th Downs

Bill Belichick and the Patriots decided to go for it on 4th down twice in the game. Both times, the Chiefs’ stonewall defense socked it to running back Mike Gillislee, who did not move the chains. Gillislee is not a huge powerhouse, like Patriots’ former running back LeGarrette Blount. Blount probably would have converted them to first downs. While Gilislee scored three touchdowns in the game, it was not enough to beat Kansas City.
