At Sunday's WWE "SummerSlam 2017" pay-per-view, "The Modern Day Maharaja" will defend his WWE Championship against "The King of Strong Style." It's a collision of two of the newer stars on the main roster this past year as Mahal was formerly a "jobber" who fans believed was simply on the roster to give other talents their wins. Shinsuke Nakamura has received a major push which makes it seem he's destined for the title now. So who will win? Here are the latest "SummerSlam" match predictions from the odds.
Match preview
Jinder Mahal has been enjoying a decent WWE Championship reign ever since defeating "The Viper" Randy Orton at WWE "Backlash 2017." Mahal has managed to escape with rematch victories over Orton, including the recent "Battleground" PPV win inside the Punjabi Prison Match.
However, Mahal had help from a good friend, the Great Khali, in getting that championship win. He's also got the Singh Brothers constantly roaming the ring to help him out.
For Shinsuke Nakamura, it's been a quick path straight to the top. He entered the "SmackDown Live" roster just after WWE's "WrestleMania 33" PPV and now will be competing in his first major championship match several months later. Nakamura has previously captured the WWE NXT Championship several times and looks ready for a run with the WWE's main roster. With a recent win over John Cena, and Cena said to be heading to "Raw" for a bit, it seems this is Shinsuke's time to shine.
This past week's "SmackDown" saw John Cena take on Jinder Mahal in a non-title matchup.
Cena looked ready to grab a big win ahead of "SummerSlam," but his upcoming opponent Baron Corbin showed up to crash the party. Corbin hit Cena with the "Money in the Bank Briefcase" to cause a disqualification. From there, he asked for the cash in for a title shot. Unfortunately, his previous attack on Cena wasn't enough to put Cena down for good.
Cena got up on the apron to cause a distraction, allowing Jinder to get a rollup victory and secure his title. It shocked fans, and now Corbin doesn't seem to have the ability to ruin Sunday's match by cashing in.
Who will win?
Based on the latest betting odds, it's looking like Shinsuke Nakamura may have fortune on his side.
There have been wrestling journalists and fans who feel Jinder Mahal hasn't performed suitably enough in the role of a major heel champion. However, WWE was said to be using Mahal to boost their visibility to fans in India.
According to the Paddy Power Irish sports book, Nakamura is currently the favorite to win on Sunday with odds of 4 to 9 to win. The underdog will be "The Modern Day Maharaja" with odds of 13 to 8 as of this report. So this could mean that the "blue brand" gets itself a brand new champion and the reign of the "King of Strong Style" begins after "SummerSlam 2017."
WWE fans do you think Nakamura is ready for his first title reign, or should someone else win the title from Jinder Mahal?
