The WWE was founded in 1979 by Vince and Linda McMahon and since then it has been one of the most successful sports entertainment industries in the world. Others have tried and failed to recreate the success of the WWE. The WWE is revered and watched by tens of millions of fans all over the world every week. The WWE pay per views are the biggest draws for the WWE.
Summerslam is considered the second biggest pay per view of the year for WWE, second only to the granddaddy of them all WrestleMania.
Summerslam 2017 is being held in Brooklyn, NY at the Barclay's Center on Sunday August 20. The kickoff show is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., with the main program hitting the air at 7 p.m. on the WWE Network. Below is a list of the matches that have made it onto the card officially but, as any true WWE fan knows, this doesn't mean that there might not be more added later.
Matches with Championship Implications
Most of the matches that will be held at Summerslam will have Championship belt results. Here are the matches that will decide the Champions of the night.
Universal Championship Match. This match is sure to create some serious shockwaves throughout Brooklyn, and probably the rest of New York City.
This will pit four of the biggest men in the WWE against one another in a Fatal FourWay Match: Brock Lesnar vs Roman Reigns vs Samoa Joe vs Braun Strowman. This adds up to over 1200 pounds of championship ambition in the ring at the same time. Over the last few months, in a build up of drama, all four of these men have had various run ins with one another. This will be a battle for the ages.
WWE Championship. Shinsuke Nakamura made his debut on Smackdown Live on the Tuesday night after WrestleMania. Now, a mere four months later, he will battle Jinder Mahal for the Championship title. In a historic match this past Tuesday (8/8) he beat John Cena for the #1 Contendership. Will the "King of Strong Style" dethrone the "modern day Mahi Raja"?
United States Championship. They used to be the best of friends and are now the worst of bitter enemies. A.J. Styles and Kevin Owens will meet for the fourth, and hopefully final time, to decide the United States Champion. In a special stipulation, Shane McMahon was selected to be the guest referee for the match by General Manager Daniel Bryan. Can Shane be trusted to be impartial? We will sure find out.
Raw Women's Championship. Because of a shoulder injury, Bayley was forced to relinquish her #1 contendership. Alexa Bliss will face the winner of the match, to take place this coming Monday, between Nia Jax and Sasha Banks. Either challenger lends herself to an interesting storyline. Sasha Banks and Alexa Bliss have nothing but distain for one another, that will be a cat fight type of match.
On the other hand, Bliss and Nia Jax have, what seems to be, some type of mutual friendship. Who will Alexa have to defend her title against, the heavyweight Samoan beauty or the Legit Boss?
Smackdown Women's Championship. Natalya and Naomi will face off for their match under the spotlights of SummerSlam. Natalya earned her opportunity after winning a Fatal Five Way Match: Lana vs Tamina vs Charlotte vs Natalya vs Becky Lynch. Will Brooklyn feel the glow or will Natalya show what she is "the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be?
*Don't forget that Ms. Money in the Bank Carmella may be lurking in the shadows waiting for her opportunity.
Smackdown Tag Team Championship. The Usos will go to battle with the ever positively popular The New Day. These two Tag Teams have rap battled and wrestled their way to a serious rivalry that needs a conclusion.
The Usos or New Day?
Some matches are pure entertainment
A few of the matches at SummerSlam do not have championship implications, but that doesn't take away from the entertainment value they will bring to that night in Brooklyn.
Finn Balor vs Bray Wyatt. Bray Wyatt has chosen his next target for his riddles and unorthodox ways. But did "The Eater of Worlds" bite off more than he an chew? Many are anticipating that this will be the return of Balor's alter ego the Demon King. It has a cool ambiance about it, the Demon King vs the Eater of Worlds? A battle for the ages for sure because neither man is one who fears anyone, or anything.
John Cena vs Baron Corbin. Baron Corbin attacked Nakamura after his #1 contender match with John Cena, and Cena came to his aid.
Now, after Baron Corbin put his foot in his mouth, Daniel Bryan made this match official. We will see how Corbin fairs against 16 time world champion John Cena.
Big Show vs Big Cass. Simply put, big show plans on teaching Big Cass a lesson in respect. All the while, Enzo Amore will be suspended above the ring in a shark cage. Yes a shark cage.
As always, the WWE is guaranteed to put on a show to remember. It airs Sunday, August 20, on the WWE Network.
